Caissie Canine Instruction: Why Does My Dog Growl When I Pick Him/Her Up?

Writer's picture: caissiecanineinstrcaissiecanineinstr

We begin this week’s “RUFF TAILS” featuring a beautiful 1.5-year-old Labrador named Buddy.

This is Buddy. He came into my life a year to the day I had to say goodbye to my 15-year-old “Sedona”. Buddy is scary smart and is stuck to me like Velcro.

He is just coming up on two years old and has made remarkable progress with Paul’s help and guidance.

Welcome to Doggie Dialogue

There are a few reasons why your K9 may growl at you when you pick them up. Your K9 could be feeling anxious and uncomfortable with their paws off the ground, they may have had a past negative experience, or have pain in their body, that you may be unaware of.

This is their way of telling you “I am not happy” with this situation. “I would like you to stop.”

It is important for you to “listen” as this could potentially escalate if ignored.

If your K9 is recovering from an injury or has joint pain, lifting them could cause them discomfort and lead to a growl.

Some K9’s feel uncomfortable when lifted as they feel insecure when all four paws are not on the ground.

Remember to pay attention to your K9’s body language. When your K9 has a tucked tail or curled lip this will help you to better understand your dog’s level of discomfort.

If you find your dog’s growling frequently and seems aggressive, please feel free to reach out to Paul at any time for some assistance.

Remember it is important to always respect your dog’s boundaries.
